Big Boy 4008 |
Description: |
Union Pacific 4008 rests in the yard at Laramie in late October, 1956. Steam is nearing the end on the UP and the rest of the nations railroads. In just two months, the Union Pacifics fellow western railroad Southern Pacific will end all steam operations on their lines, and in just two and a half more years UP will follow suit. 4008 would be retired at the end of steam in 1959, and scrapped on August 7, 1962. Two ALCOs at Pullman |
Description: |
UP 4008 drags a freight train through Pullman, a suburb of Denver. The exact date is unknown (except for the year, 1956), but I assume it is sometime in November or December. Note the ALCO switcher parked on the station track. The switcher is either an S2 or S4, built not long after the final Big Boys, and retired by 1970. Big Boys and Turbine |
Description: |
Big Boy 4008 (right) leads a train past 4013 and an unidentified Gas Turbine at the PFE ice racks. 4008 and 4013 only have two years left before they will make their final runs. Both will be scrapped in 1962 and 1963 respectively. The Turbine is either X59, a standard turbine, or X69, a veranda turbine. If anybody knows which one, please feel free to comment.
