L&N 4-6-2 271 |
Description: |
Louisville & Nashville K-5 class 4-6-2 271 was running Iight in the 400-block of Elysian Fields Avenue, on its way from GENTILLY YARD to JULIA STREET YARD. The 271 was passing two New Orleans landmarks. On the right was the former Claiborne Power Station, which had been built in 1896 and was closed in 1922; while just behind the tender, at the corner of Decatur Street, was the home of Dickey’s Potato Chips – a long-time New Orleans institution. Notice the Automatic Train Stop equipment box on the 271’s boiler between the sand and steam domes. ATS was needed for operation between Gentilly and Mobile. (approximate date of photo) |
