Here is a rare photo of the American Sheet & Tin Plate Co 0-6-0 switcher #41 taken by Thomas Lawson, Jr. Built by the H. K. Porter Inc in September of 1026, this small switcher served the American Sheet & Tin in Gary, IN until being sold to the Texaco Co on April 29, 1937, just a few months after this shot was taken. This site does not show a listing for a straight 0-6-0 switcher under Porter, hence the 0-6-0T classification. |

This stubby legged yard switcher started life as a 2-8-0 Consolidation built by Alco-Pittsburgh and delivered to the Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern RR in April of 1907 (bldr #42082).. Original specs as a 2-8-0 - 51" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 187,900 lb, tractive effort of 45,173 lb. After the CLS&E was leased by the EJ&E, it was rebuilt by the EJ&E to an 0-8-0 configuration in June, 1928. The switcher lasted until being scrapped in December of 1947. Unknown photographer and the date is approximate. |

CSS&SB control trailer 353 at Gary, Indiana on February 16, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Standard Steel Car Company in 1929, this was one of four parlor cars built for the South Shore. The first two, 351 and 352, were built by Pullman and were heavier (111,400 pounds) and required a pair of six-wheel trucks. The second two, 353 and 354 were lighter (92,350 pounds) and used the South Shore's then standard Baldwin 84-60AA trucks without traction motors. As built there were 24 individual seats availble for 50 cents over the regular fare, no controls and the end windows at both ends were considerably larger, going almost to the floor. The parlor cars were generally at the end of Limiteds which also included dining cars. By 1937 the demand for parlor car service had all but vanished and the two Standard Steel parlor cars were converted to control trailer coaches with 56 seats. |
