Definitely a sad sight with this Baldwin 4-8-2 Light Mountain steam locomotive sitting in the scrap line waiting for the torch. Built in December of 1925, the massive and powerful loco was put to work hauling passengers. Barred by bridge loading limits from operating further south, the 4-8-2s later added Louisville-East St Louis trains and even freights. They saw out steam on the L & N, retiring in the mid-1950s. This EMD GP9 locomotive turns out to be quite a boomer as it bounced from one railroad roster to another during its service. Originally built by EMD in February of 1957 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois #238, it became MP #345, TP #345 before landing on the Louisville & Nashville roster as their #545. It didn't stop there as it eventually became SCL #2413. No photographer, date or location was listed for this b&w slide. However, with C&EI boxcars in the background, it is most likely Evansville where the C&EI interchanged with the L&N. The date is approximate and set before its renumbering as a SCL member in 1971. |

As a native Hoosier, it's always great to post an Indiana related photo like this one. St Louis Southwestern GP35 #6680 was built by EMD in July of 1965 originally as SP GP35 #7762 (serial # 30169) but diverted to the SSW along with sister #7763 and both given SSW numbers of 780 & 781. SSW #780 was later renumbered SSW #6680. The loco was rebuilt into a GP35R and then rebuilt by new owner, Burlington Northern, as a GP39RM by Morrison-Knudsen. Final disposition is unknown. No photographer was listed for this photo which is now part of my rr collection. |
