New Orleans Public Service car 958 was at the end of the JACKSON line, on Jackson Avenue at Tchoupitoulas Street. The car was facing the Jackson Avenue-Gretna ferry landing on the Mississippi River, which would have been just across Tchoupitoulas Street and several railroad tracks. About three months after this photo was taken, the JACKSON streetcars were replaced by gasoline-powered buses on 19 May 1947. On 2 October 1947 the gasoline-powered busses were replaced by electric buses and these were replaced by diesel busses on 19 March 1967. Car 958 had been built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1924 and had the distinction of being the last regularly-scheduled car to operate on the original CANAL line on 31 May 1964. It was scrapped on 6 June 1964. |
