BN SD9 6150
Burlington Northern Railroad SD9 6150 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in July 1955 as CB&Q SD9 348 (c/n 20558) on EMD Order 5399, it became BN 6150 and later BNSF 6150. It still has evidence of a steam generator. Also seen is PNC SD10 (or maybe an SD18, SD20, or perhaps SD24m, I'm not sure, depends on where you find the information, each author is different) 1852, built in September 1959 as UP SD24 427. Early in 1980, Morrison-Knudsen rebuilt five ex-UP SD24's for PNC, de-turbocharging them and disabling the dynamic brakes (blisters are blanked over), producing an 1800 horsepower locomotive. Three were leased by the BN for a time, this one was completed January 18, 1980 and became C&NW 6647 on March 31, 1982. It apears that the sand tower is leaking.
