CNW 4-6-2 #505 - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
Although an E9 wore the CNW #505 later, the first to do so on the CNW roster was this 1909 Alco-Schenectady built Pacific. It was an E class loco with 75" drivers and could develop a very respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to feed to its 25"x28" cylinders. The engine weight came in at 260,000 lb and its tractive effort was a medium 39,667 lb. Unfortunately its days of service are fast drawing near as the age of steam is disappearing in the 1950's. |

CNW 4-6-2 #617 - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
One of only two E class Pacifics to be fitted with an air-smoothed casing like the E-4 Hudsons (#620 was the other loco), CNW #617 looks odd as it sits in the scrap line in Chicago, IL, with the missing piece over its smokestack. Originally built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1917 as CNW 1617, it went through a major rebuild in October of 1941 included the streamlined engine shroud, an applied stoker and an increased boiler pressure to psi to 200 psi. It was renumbered CNW 617 in 1952. After nearly 39 years of service the loco was scrapped on 7/6/1956. Rebuilt specs - class E, 75" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt of 279,000 lb, tractive effort of 39,600. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

Description: |
Although a GP7 would carry the number later, this Alco Pacific had it first. Gleaming in the afternoon sun, it demonstrates the high maintenance these mostly passenger locos were afforded. Tall 75" drivers gives it a scared rabbit look and some speed pulling the coaches. This is a Robert M. Hanft photo. |

CNW 4-6-2 #2908 with a rare "Sky Spotlight" - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
A much later 1923 E2a class Alco Pacific type loco when compared to #1574 listed earlier, this one carries the proud "Route of the 400" triangular sign on the front. It sported the 79" drivers and a solid 225 psi boiler pressure. Patrick McNamara (see comment below) identified the strange looking angling "canister" on the front above the faceplate as a sky light used to announce the arrival of the crack CNW premier passenger train. Thanks, Patrick, for the info. This is a unique feature I was totally unaware of until now! |
