Nice example of a Lima 2-8-2 Mikado built for the IC in March of 1915. The loco served well and along the way was rebuilt and renumbered in October of 1941 as IC #1218. Later it was renumbered again to IC #1576. The loco was scrapped in 1956. Specs - 63" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine wt of 282,700 lb, tractive effort of 54,583 lb. Built by the Lima Locomotive Company in April of 1915, Illinois Central 2-8-2 Mikado #1732 was a solid addition to the hundreds of Mikados that IC had. In September of 1941, the loco was modified and renumbered to IC #1230. Having served the IC well for nearly 40 years, the loco met up with the scrapper's torch in 1955. Specs - 63" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 282,700 lb, tractive effort of 54,583 lb. Originally built as Illinois Central 2-8-2 #1929 by Lima Locomotive Works in October of 1923, it was later rebuilt and renumbered by the IC shops first to IC #1514 in January of 1944 and then to IC #1814 in November of 1949 as seen here. The loco lasted a few years more before being sold for scrap in May of 1955. Rebuild specs - 63.5" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 308,500 lb, tractive effort of 65,868 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

One of a group of 1919 Lima built "light-Mikados" that the USRA had originally assigned to PRR but PRR rejected 35 of them before they entered their roster and subsequently were re-assigned to Frisco. They all had 63" drivers, developed 200 psi boiler pressure for their 26"x30" cylinders, had an engine weight of 292,000 lb, and could apply a tractive effort of 54,725 lb. All were scrapped between 1948-56. |
