Description: |
The Date is an estimate. An ALCO product blt December 1903 & scrapped May 1937. This is a particuarly nice photograph. This scene is on the upgrade from Bangor yard to the round house which stood beside what is now I395. In looking at Downtown Bangor Photos the church steeples in the background are good indicators of location and perspective. The train is faceing westbound towards Northern Maine Jct in Hermon. /DL |

ATSF 4-6-0 #497 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
Here's an example of a ten wheeler built by the Rhode Island Locomotive Works in 1900, a year before it joined to form the American Locomotive Company (Alco). It had 67" drivers and could generate a respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi for its 20"x28" cylinders. The engine weight was 162,200 lb and a tractive effort of 28,418 lb. No date, location,or photographer identified on this photo so it is approxmiate date and location. |

DH 4-6-0 #500 - Delaware & Hudson |
Description: |
Another interesting life story for this locomotive. Built in June of 1903 as Delaware & Hudson 4-6-0 camelback ten wheeler #500 (serial #27651, D-3 class), it was rebuilt by Alco-Schenectady in 1927. At that time, they re-engineered the camelback loco into a conventional single cab layout, increased the boiler pressure to 225 psi and the cylinders were enlarged by an inch. I believe this loco lasted until being scrapped between 1951-52. C.W. "Bill" Jernstrom photo |
