Big Boy 4013 |
Description: |
UP 4013 rests in the Green River yard in mid-1948. The massive 4-8-8-4 engine was built by ALCO in 1941, and would operate on the Union Pacific for 18 years before its retirement in 1959. Even after retirement, it would be another 4 years before 4013 would be cut up, eventually being scrapped on April 23, 1963. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Big Boys and Turbine |
Description: |
Big Boy 4008 (right) leads a train past 4013 and an unidentified Gas Turbine at the PFE ice racks. 4008 and 4013 only have two years left before they will make their final runs. Both will be scrapped in 1962 and 1963 respectively. The Turbine is either X59, a standard turbine, or X69, a veranda turbine. If anybody knows which one, please feel free to comment. UP 4013 |
Description: |
UP 4013 takes a spin on the 135-foot turntable in Laramie. Laramie, Green River, Odgen, North Platte, and Cheyenne all recieved new turntables to accomodate the Big Boys when they first arrived. The latter two measured 126 feet, leaving 6 feet of the Big Boys hanging off the ends, while Green River, Ogden, and Laramie had 135 foot turntables, the only ones the Big Boys could fit on. UP 4013 |
Description: |
Big Boy 4013 negotiates yard trackage in Cheyenne in late August, 1958. The gargantuan Big Boy was the pinnacle of UP steam, with a power matched by few. The 4000s would become famous with railfans for their massive size and tremendous pulling power for this reason. However, no amount of fame would save 4013 from the impending end of steam. In 1959, the engine would pull its last train, and was withdrawn from service. For nearly four years the engine would sit stored in Cheyenne, before finally being cut up in April, 1963.
