IC 3137 |
Description: |
CN local approaches Adams St. via former MILW rails enroute to Briess Malting & Ingredients Co. at Chilton, WI on 26 Jul. '15. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. He sent a request to the county seat, then Stockbridge, to make the name change official. A miscommunication resulted in the middle syllable being lost to history and the name became Chilton. |

CN local executes a run around via former MILW rails as it readies for the trip back to Neenah from Chilton, WI on 26 Jul. '15. The facility in the background used to receive rail service, but does not at the moment. It is currently shared by JTD Enterprises, Inc. and Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. JTD was preceded by Midwest Machine Co., previously Mirro-Foley Co., originally Aluminum Specialty Co., a.k.a. Chilton Aluminum. Aluminum Specialty Co. was founded at Manitowoc, WI, they decided to build a second factory at Chilton in 1919, 2 stories, 60 by 200 ft., at a cost of $75,000 ($40,000 for the building and the remainder for equipment). The former MILW depot stood just out of frame to the right. |

IC 3137 at U.S Papers / Sonoco |
Description: |
This mill was once the John Strange Paper Company, organized in 1891. It was originally John Strange Pail and Tub Company, organized in 1881. Pail and Tub started to make paper in 1888. Around 1969, John Strange Paper became a part of the Menasha Corporation and was again sold off in 1981 to U.S. Papers. U.S. Papers then became a part of Sonoco in 2001. My earliest recollections of the mill start about at the time of the switch to U.S. Papers. Since 1981, the mill has shrunk in size and rail traffic has diminished. Hopefully the mill will continue to provide jobs for many more years to come. |

Description: |
CN local approaches the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Apr. '16. The local is passing the corporate headquarters of Plexus and Affinity clinic on Main St. Both are part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The steel columns and beam framing the train are the last significant remnant of the defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant). It supported steam pipes that ran from the energy center to the paper mill. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. Demolition is nearly complete, after several delays. A large pile of broken concrete is about all that remains and will soon be removed and recycled. The original ca. 1881 Wisconsin Central (WC) depot stood on the south (right) side of the tracks right about where the locomotive is. I don't know how long the depot stood, but it was converted to a freight house when a new depot was constructed on Sherry St. in 1891. The ca. 1881 depot was built on pilings in the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts, these tracks were originally on a trestle over the water. All of the earth under and to the left (north) of these rails is landfill, deposited in the south end of the lake by the paper mills starting in the 1950s. That former landfill is now Arrowhead Park. The white building partially visible on the right is Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. |

CN 9515 and IC 3137 |
Description: |
A CN train passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it departs the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 5 Nov. '23. The train was heading for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards. |

IC 3137, et al. |
Description: |
A CN train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 12 Nov. '23. The train was heading for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3137 and CN 9515. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where one line heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, is labeled Winnebago Junction on some old maps. |
