Album Info:Here is a massive Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 articulated unit built in 1936. Pardon the quality of the photos as these were scanned images from crude 35mm contact photos (1 3/4 x 2" size). Nevertheless, the loco was massive in size and power. No photographer was listed. The photos were re-scanned, enlarged and re-posted on 2/20/2025.

Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1232
Title:  Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1232
Description:  A note on the photo states "N&W big Mallet by XO Tower in 1955 with train of empties. Chillicothe, OH." N&W2-6-6-4 #1232 was built by the Norfolk & Western shops in 1936 as class A articulated unit. It sported 70" drivers, developed a massive 300psi, had an overall engine+tender wheelbase of 108.27', and an engine weight of 573,000 lb. Although they had a rating of 13,000 tons slow freight, they could pull passenger trains at 70mph. The cheap coal available to N&W helped support these monsters of the rail until they were retired in 1958-59. No photographer was listed for this photo

Rear of N&W mallet train
Title:  Rear of N&W mallet train
Description:  A note on the photo states "Rear of trn of N&W mallet, Chilli., OH, 1955." A typical N&W caboose rides the end of the coal train behind one of the mallets in this album. Unfortunately with the poor quality 35mm homemade contact print, it's not possible to accurately identify the car or caboose number but it's bringing up the rear of this album like it used to in the train!
