Album Info:With the anniversary of the tragic Chicago South Shore & South Bend accident approaching, it is time to post a few photos of the head-on collision between two Chicago South Shore & South Bend trains. This was the first passenger fatality since 1909 for the last interurban in the nation. Unfortunately, seven passengers were killed with over 40 others injured when the eastbound Train 7 from Chicago ran a red signal on the western approach to Gauntlet Bridge which allowed only one train at a time. This has now been corrected with the addition of a second bridge. Cars #27 (eastbound) and #36 (westbound) with all the fatalities in car 36 were the two lead cars that sustained the damage with the rest of the cars unharmed. These are recently acquired photos of car #36 taken by an unknown photographer.
