Album Info:This year for Spring Break, my aunt, brother, a friend, and I went up to Wisconsin to the Dells and the Fond Du Lac area. Along the course of the trip, we caught trains in Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin on CSX, US Rail, TP&W, Amtrak, CP, CN, UP, and BNSF. Fun and crazy trip with the family as always! Enjoy!

CSX 308
Title:  CSX 308
Description:  Due to having to go aound the block to park at the Hampton Inn, we got stopped at a traffic light and there just happaned to be a CSX autorack train sitting and waiting for clearence on the L&I. Took a window shot of it. The room was very nice and the Pacers won their game tonight! But Purdue lost to Texas Tech tonight in the Elite 8. Oh well, without Isaac Haas what do you expect? Anyways, now off to a good nights rest before heading up to Wisconsin tomorrow!

GMTX 412
Title:  GMTX 412
Description:  Got up early the next morning to hit the road. Unfortunately for us, there happens to be a giant snow storm headed our way and is supposed to dump about 8 inches of snow on Indy. To avoid running into the heart of the storm, we have to cut north and then go west when we get up to US 24 in Logansport. We ate breakfast at the hotel which was very good, and by that point it had already started to snow. But by the time we got north of I465, there was barely any snow on the ground. I was going to take advantage of this detour to see a couple of trains, so first we cut over to US 35 in Kokomo and followed U.S. Rail north and first got some photos of GMTX 412 in Lincoln. This unit has been sitting here dead for about 2 years now, and they keep it in suprisingly good shape. Hopefully they get it moving again though soon!

TPW 3440
Title:  TPW 3440
Description:  The first TPW train we ran into was just outside of Remington, IN near I65 sitting in the once mighty “Hoosier Lift” intermodal yard. This yard was once a major TOFC yard for the ATSF, but you’d never guess that now. This train was a WB local, mostly of green hopper cars with a SD40-2 and a GP38-2 in trail.

TPW 3441
Title:  TPW 3441
Description:  By the time we got to Watseka, we were starting to get into some of the snow from the storm. It wasnt snowing too hard though. We stopped to get gas at the Sunoco station in town then went and checked the CSX/UP Joint Line. There were no trains on it, but there was another TPW train, this one an eastbound manifest sitting parked with no crew just outside of town with 2 SD40-2s. There was some snow sticking to the ground by this point so that added a touch to the photos I took!

CRGX 9698
Title:  CRGX 9698
Description:  We got to the east side of Gillman and it was snowing the same pace it was in Watseka, but we got ot the other side of town and it was snowing like nuts. Already about 3 inches of snow on the ground. We tried to still make our way through though, and I tried to take a couple pics of one of the 2 switchers that Cargill uses at their grain elevator along the IC outside of town. I didnt want to go very far because we couldnt stay long, but as you can see with it snowing so hard, going telephoto wasnt the best option.

AMTK 4618
Title:  AMTK 4618
Description:  The further west we went the more snow we got into. By the time we got to Chenoa, you couldnt see in any direction. We pulled into the McDonalds parking lot and ended up getting stuck in the heavy, deep, wet snow. We were forced to stay the evening at the Americas Best Value Inn along the Interstate in town, which ended up having no vacancy later that night due to the storm. I attempted to go get shots of AMTK 20 in the heavy snow that afternoon. The only way I could go catch it would be having to walk for a half a mile. Thats pretty hard to do with it snowing so hard you can barely see your hand in front of your own face. I left just a little too late and missed it. Didnt even see the power because of the snow falling so hard. I waited another hour and a half and finally by that point the snow had started to calm down a bit so I could walk down and catch AMTK 304, Lincoln Service train, headed north with my first Siemens Charger unit leading! By this point there was about a Foot of snow on the ground and I could see 3 different wrecks from where I was standing by the UP tracks waiting for the Amtrak train. The tracks that run north/south through Chenoa are owned by UP, but are mostly used by Amtrak for their Lincoln Service trains and the Texas Eagle.

AMTK 4620
Title:  AMTK 4620
Description:  The stay at the hotel wasnt really as bad as I figured it would be. Not quite used to staying in the roadside inns but this was was pretty nice! By morning the parking lot was cleared out enough that we were able to get out and get moving towards I39 and Wisconsin. Before we left though we stayed around just long enough that I could photograph one more Lincoln Service train, this one being AMTK 300 with Siemens unit AMTK 4620 leading

BNSF 4421
Title:  BNSF 4421
Description:  Didnt run into any more TPW trains along US 24. We began to head north on I39 at El Paso, IL. By the time we got to LaSalle/Peru, about 40 mile to the north of where we stayed, no snow on the ground at all. Comes to show you how much impact a storm can make if it is in a direct path. We got to Mendota, IL and stopped at their McDonalds to call Blueridge, our reservation site, and tell them the reason that we were coming a day late. We had to attend a meeting that afternoon where they would convince us to buy a pass to their exclusive vacation getaway packages that afternoon, so there would be no stopping for rail photography. But, as luck would have it, as soon as we started to go inside to pick up some breakfast inside, I heard the horn of an eastbound BNSF train on the BN, so I quickly ran over to the other side of the road and got a photo of it in the BP station parking lot. This train was an eastbound sand train. The first train I have caught in Mendota since our big Out West outing in 2012! After we ate, we continued north.

UP eastbound coal train
Title:  UP eastbound coal train
Description:  Sometimes you just have to take the shot you can. An eastbound UP coal train passes underneath I39 in Rochelle through the trees. While I dont like taking shots like this very often, sometimes you have to if you dont want to leave a train behind. Sadly, that was not the case with a train on the BNSF Transcon earlier today. A stack train with 4 BNSF units and a CITIRAIL 4th out passed underneath us, but I could not get a photo of it due to how fast it was moving and how much snow it was kicking up off the ground. Missed getting a photo of the DPU on this train, but it was another AC4400CW by the looks of it.

AMTK 169
Title:  AMTK 169
Description:  After about another 2 hours of driving, we finally made it into the Lake Dolton/Wisconsin Dells area. We went to our timeshare presentation, and even though our speaker was pretty fun, we werent convinced to buy any of the packages. We were let out just in time to head over to the Amtrak station in the Dells and catch AMTK 7 coming west for its station stop. Today, the Empire Builder was running 3 minutes early which suprised me since this train is usually the one that seems to get delayed the worse. The station is a nice spot to watch trains and it will be a nice place to sit when I watch for a short time tomorrow. After catching Amtrak we went to a Pizza Lab place, which is where we could design our own pizzas, kind of like Subway. That was some of the best pizzas I have ever had. The only problem with coming up here this time of year is that most of the outdoor attractions are still closed for Winter. I guess you wouldnt want to mess around at an outdoor waterpark with it only being 40 degrees outside anyway. We stayed at the Springhill Suites by Marriot, which was very nice! Looking forward to an exciting day tomorrow!

NS 9291
Title:  NS 9291
Description:  Started out today by going down to the Amtrak station to watch the CP/AMTK action pass me by. Wasnt looking for it being the best of action. While this is CPs main west corridor between the U.S. and Canada, ever since Hunter Harrison took control of it, the action has been significantly less compared to what it had been since he combined and abolished so many trains. But I wasnt dissapointed, while there were some blank spots here and there, the action stayed heavy enough for the 2 and a half hours I stayed and I caught 5 trains all together. Was actually very pleased with the train count, but not so much the power. Thanks to local railfans and social media, I was able to get some ATCS feed for the Tomah Sub, which really helped out with my railfanning today! The first train was CP 286, an eastbound manifest with NS and CSX engines leading

Title:  AMTK 190
Description:  Next train was the eastbound Empire Builder, AMTK 8, arriving into the Wisconsin Dells station about 1 hour and 10 minutes late. I would have shot it coming by the station, but with the crowd of people that was already starting to form way back when CP 286 passed, I had to just take a regular shot from the other side of the platform.

Description:  The final train of my stay at the station was loaded coal train CP 813. UP 6005
Title:  UP 6005
Description:  We went to an escape room later in the day. This one was a Crazy Cat Lady Escape Room where we had to try to navigate the steps in trying to escape an apartment building full of cats. We got 89% of the way done. Might have been easier to get through if Toby would have stopped finding clues before we needed them. Anyways, we then went to McDonalds so I could eat some lunch. The McDonalds in the Dells is pretty neat. It is in a very large log cabin. As soon as we got our food I heard the horn of a westbound train, so I jumped out of the car and raced to the other side of the highway, and caught counterpart coal train CP 812 crossing the Wisconsin River with the highway and the dam up front. Would have bee nice if the street lamps would not have been in the way on the hgihway, but it still made for an interesting shot.

UP 7428
Title:  UP 7428
Description:  I think the shot of the DPU on CP 812 turned out better. After this train we went over to play some Mini Golf at Pirate Coves Mini Golf courses. While I was eating my lunch in the car, I missed CP 2286 with a CSX engine leading. At the time I thought it might had been a CP unit leading it since this engine sounded like a CP, but I later found out it was just a CSX. Still dissapointing to miss though. Anyways after I was done we went and played some mini golf. We chose the hardest course which was way in the back of the grounds. Took forever to walk to get to the beginning, but at least we got our exercise in.

AMTK 137
Title:  AMTK 137
Description:  We (or I guess just I) got midway through the course before I heard the westbound Empire Builder come to town. Knowing that this would probably be my last train I would catch in the Dells, I raced out of the Mini Golf grounds and went over and shot the train on the Wisconsin River bridge. With all the plant life and the bridge in this shot I think it turned out pretty well! Nathanael and Toby ended up tying for 1st place in the game, I was 2nd, and my Aunt was 3rd. After mini golf, we went to see Rick Wilcox magic show, which was very cool, and went to Buffalo Phils restaurant in Lake Dolton. Model trains serve your food at that restaurant, and we were served by a bluebonnet ATSF GP30. I ate steak there and I would say it was one of the best ones I have ever had! If your a train lover I recommend you eat here! Good food and a neat style of service! Now onto tomorrows fun along CN at Byron Hill!

CN 5303
Title:  CN 5303
Description:  Before heading out of town today, we went to a Phsyc Show, which other than the magic show, is the Number 1 attraction in the Dells. It was freaky, but it was pretty cool! Didnt bother catching anything on CP that morning, even though I did hear AMTK 8 and a CP train. The most amazing thing about the entire trains on CP is that I didn't see a single CP unit during my stay. Not a one. Sure a lot of foreign power on that line. Before leaving the Dells all together we stopped and got lunch at Culvers. On the way to Fond Du Lac we saw an empty coal train at Portage with UP power but we didnt stop to take photos. We got to Fond Du Lac and stayed at the Holiday Inn express, which was very nice! My aunt and I went over to the famous Byron Hill on the CN just north of the small unincorporated town of Byron, WI. Here, CN uses pusher sets to help the really heavy trains make it over the steep grade just to the south of us. As soon as we got to the tracks, the gates came down and the pusher set was heading back to the yard in Fond Du Lac. Todays helpers included a CP Cowl Draper Taper SD40-2 and an IC OLS SD40-3.

CN 2589
Title:  CN 2589
Description:  CN 2589 creeps up to the road with CN Q199 in tow preparing for a crew change. The new crew was very friendly and we talked for a bit. The dispatcher forgot that he had sent them out there and he was going to send another crew van there. The crew already called were able to stop him in time from doing that, but they asked me if I could be the new dispatcher instead of him ;)
