The REBEL |
Description: |
I don’t know if this photographer was trying to get the sign in front of the Gentilly Theater or Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Train No. 1 – the southbound REBEL – but he managed to get both. This shot would have been taken at around 7 A.M. in about 1950 at the Southern Railway’s new overpass across Gentilly Blvd. (U.S. 90) in New Orleans. The double feature included IMPACT, which was released in the U.S. on 1 April 1949, and ELEPHANT BOY, which had been released here in April 1937. The REBEL was discontinued between Slidell and New Orleans on 8 March 1954 and the theater burned down in 1978. |

Orinoco Units |
Description: |
CVG (Corporacion Venezolana de Guayana) Ferrominera Orinoco C.A. units 1050, 1049 and 1051 were photographed at the Illinois Central's MAYS YARD near New Orleans. They spent most of January 1997 here waiting for their ship to come in so they could be shipped to their new home in Venezuela. The locomotives were built as Norfolk & Western high-nose SD35's 1557, 1554 and 1569 before being rebuilt into SD38-2TC units by VMV Enterprises. The IC finally delivered them to the New Orleans Public Belt on 23 January for movement to the Seventh Street Wharf. This state-owned operation was originally developed in the early 1950's by the U.S. Steel subsidiary Orinoco Mining Co. (approximate date) |

BNSF 581 and LMX 8595 |
Description: |
BNSF B40-8W 581 was parked in the siding at Alvord, Texas (on the former Fort Worth & Denver) while LMX B39-8 8595 was passing on a westbound Z-train. Five days earlier, the 581 was the lead unit on train H-ALTBAR1-03 (Alliance, TX to Barstow, CA) when it ran into the rear of empty coal train E-SLPCAM3-11 here. The accident was caused by an obstruction in the brake line on H-ALTBAR, which had slowed to 20 mph, before the collision. Both crew members jumped prior to impact and received only minor injuries. The 581 was the Santa Fe’s second-to-last B40-8W, having been built in March 1992. It was subsequently repaired, retired in 2010 and sold to the Arkansas-Oklahoma Railroad. LMX 8595 was sold to Relco (RLCX) in June 2001 and was later NREX 8595. |

Description: |
This northbound CSX train, powered by AC4400CW 320 and C40-8W 7770, was in the siding at St. Elmo, Alabama. At an elevation of about 135 feet, this is the highest point on the CSX between New Orleans and Mobile. Saint Elmo Hill was the only "ruling" grade on the otherwise-flat NO&M Subdivision; its grade is approximately 0.9 percent for about 9 miles in either direction with a few gentle curves. The photo was taken at the Argyle Road grade crossing and the little brick building on the right belonged to AT&T. |
