Description:  A mystery! The number is long faded from this old Southern Pacific caboose. I might have seen the very same one rolling on this stretch of track in the 1980s; for sure I saw many like it. No clue why Union Pacific decided to tack it on to the end of this mixed freight.

Description:  Never met a zoom lens I didnt like. UP 7345 is rolling out of the old SP downtown yard onto the Lufkin Subidvision, bound for Houston. A couple of fans were filming it just off-camera to the right, so it was blowing the horn like crazy for their benefit.

Down and up
Title:  Down and up
Description:  The stretch of the Rabbit Line where I watched countless Southern Pacific freights roll in and out of Shreveport between 1985 and 1992. At night the old Espee oscilating Mars lights would eerily illuminate the surrounding trees, even before the train had even come into view, and more than anything they sent a clear message into the darkness: something is coming; get out of the way! The modern ditch lights just don't come close. I am still fascinated by the long downward and upward arc of the tracks as it crosses the Crabapple Street grade crossing.

Description:  I set up alongside Mansfield Road to see if anything happened along. In amazingly short order, I heard the distant wail of an airhorn... but to my surprise, it was coming from the south! A moment later this northbound unit coal train roared past on the normally south-only Rabbit Line, with KCS/BNSF power up front, and CN/BNSF pushers in back.
