Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Winter 2017
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
12/21/2016 - 3/19/2017
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2017, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 2630 and CN 895H
Description:
CN container train crosses the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it ieads south past a halted through freight at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Dec. '16. The guardrail marks the location of the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side ok the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sheqry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main'St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The white building beyond the train on the right is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. faaility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He&was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton6 WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s this facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolisjed at some point. The Main St. overpass is in the background at left.

CN 3029, CN 2856
Description:
A CN through freight parallels Broad St. as it rounds a slight curve and approaches Waugoo Ave. while hbaded southwest via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Dec. '16. Train had three locomotives, CN 3029, CN 2856, ?? 2982. The former C&NW depot#is partially visible background left. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it openkd on 1 Dec. ’84. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. Currently used by Clarity Care. I was hoping to get a full view of the south#end of the depot in the shot, but the camera’s automatic focus feature did not do its job at the exact moment I hoped it would.

Description:
CN local passes the former C&NW depot after servicing Expera Specialty Solutions at Kaukauna, WI on 27 Dec. '16. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

CN 9424 and the Falconer
Description:
This falconer seems to think, erroneously, obviously, that the railroad tracks are a good place to practice his unique craft. Meanwhile, behind him, a CN local approaches the Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 overpass as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 14 Jan. '17. Train took the siding to wait for a northbound local and had one locomotive, CN 9424. The original right of way used to pass where I was standing. The curve in the foreground was installed to cross over to the former SOO rails when portions of the C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were pulled up. The overpass is the approach to the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) over Little Lake Butte des Morts and is part of the interchange of Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) and Hwy. 41.

Description:
CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it approaches the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jan. '17. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen on Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood background left, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. A large pile of broken concrete is about all that remains and will soon be removed and recycled. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill stood to the right for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, Neenah, WI 54956, and Affinity clinic at 101 Main St. occupy the sight of the old paper mill.

CN container train approaches Hwy. M as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on a foggy 21 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 8823 pulling and CN 8845 mid-train. The WC built a depot here somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I recently found it depicted on a map. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. The depot stood approximately where the CN microwave tower now stands, behind me.

CN 3022
Description:
A northbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 3022 pulling and CN 2873 mid-train. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.
