Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Spring 2016
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
3/20/2016 - 6/19/2016
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2016, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

IC 3110 and GTW 6420
Description:
CN local momentarily fouls W. Prospect Ave./Hwy. BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on its way back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Apr. '16. The local is spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and the Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI to the south (right). The locomotives and the 1st freight car are in the Town of Menasha, the next 3-4 freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, and, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train, out of frame to the left, is in Appleton, WI.

The lead locomotive is passing the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

IC 3129
Description:
CN Appleton based crew approaches S. Perkins St. as a Neenah based local passes on the main line while both head northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 May '16. The Neenah crew was slowing to halt on the main line to set out a string of cars before continuing on to service Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Appleton crew has just dropped their train (partially visible on the right) at the far southwestern end of the yard after completing their work in Appleton, Kimberly, and Combined Locks. The Neenah crew will pick up those cars later on their way back to Neenah.

GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Description:
CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it traverses the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI with 34 cars on 15 May '16. I believe they were headed for Manitowoc, WI. The sun's location was less-than-ideal, but I wanted to capture a train with 3 locomotives in this yard because it doesn't seem to happen very often.

CN 4704
Description:
CN local shoves a couple of boxcars across N. Lake St. as it services the Clearwater Paper Corp. mill via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 21 May '16. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29, known as the Lakeview Mill. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use.

CN 2884 and CN 3045
Description:
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it speeds northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 May '16. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

Description:
CN local, headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna, approaches the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 Jun. '16. They are passing some new apartments or condominiums erected last year at the former site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing, makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in the Flats at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of a new factory here in ’04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block.

CN local services Intertape Polymer Group (IPG) from the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location here on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99.

IC 3115
Description:
CN local crosses Appleton St. as it works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

IC 3115
Description:
CN local disappears behind Dura-Fibre, LLC, 352 6th St., Menasha, WI, as it shoves north via former Milwaukee Road (MILW) rails at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The facility has a spur, but it does not seem to benefit from regular rail service. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. By ’31 the Wisconsin Container Corp. had moved into the facility to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.
